Who are we?
We are the University of Maryland Women's Club Ultimate B team, Cosmic!!! On April 3, 2017 we were unofficially ranked as the #1 Women's B team in the nation by a frisbee blogger! Check it out here. After our out of this world 2017 season, we were officially ranked the #2 Women's Developmental team by USA Ultimate (we are 149th out of all women's A and B teams, but if you search "Developmental" in the competition division you will see that we are the second highest ranked team :))! To top it off, three out of four say we're out of this world.
Aside from our modesty, we are a fun-loving, amazing group of women. We come from all different states, majors, and sports backgrounds. None of us really played frisbee before college. We mainly joined to learn a new sport and meet new people. Cosmic is so much more than a frisbee team, it is a lifestyle. Just ask the 4 past/present captains who got Cosmic tattoos ;). We love, support, and roast each other...and win frisbee games. Cosmic love runs deep. The best way to get to know us is to come to a practice! We always welcome new players of all skill levels :). Come join the fam.

B team vs. a team
UMD also has a Women's A team called Helpful Corn. We practice right next to each other and cheer each other on! Both teams are a part of the larger UMD frisbee community which also consists of men's teams. It is up to the A team captains whether or not they do cuts. Regardless of which team you choose/chooses you, you will make awesome friends on both teams and have a ton of fun playing frisbee!
The main differences between Helpful Corn and Cosmic are the time commitment, competition level, and team style. Helpful Corn requires players to be at every practice unless they inform the captains of their excuse. Cosmic highly encourages players to come to every practice, but does not require an excuse if you can't come. Helpful Corn usually has a longer weekend practice, while Cosmic does not have any weekend practices. Helpful Corn also attends more tournaments and travels farther distances. For example, Helpful Corn attends tournaments in Axton, VA (~6 hours from College Park) and Cosmic attends tournaments 2.5 hours away max. A teams play at a higher level of competition than B teams, even though skill levels of individual players may be similar. Both teams want to play hard and have fun, however, A teams focus more on strategy, plays, and competitive subbing while B teams focus more on learning, player development, and equal/fair playing time. Although we have different philosophies, we are all athletes and enjoy competing against other strong teams. At the end of the season, Helpful Corn has the chance to attend conferences, regionals, and nationals while Cosmic only has conferences. Finally, the difference in team style is a little harder to explain (so come to practice!). Cosmic is more relaxed. We vote on which drills we do and dictate our practices based on how we feel while Helpful Corn has more structured practices.

What is Ultimate?
Ultimate is a non-contact sport played with 7 players to a team. Each team is trying to get the disc into the opposing team's endzone without running while in possession of the disc. It's a fast paced sport that combines elements of football and soccer. Everyone gets to be a scorer and a defender! There are no observers (referees) during regular season games. The spirit and rules of the game are enforced by the players on the field! It is an empowering experience that allows you to build a relationship with the opposing team. Teams even cheer for each other at the end of games!
Why play?
Besides getting to play the best sport in the world, you'll meet a ton of cool new people while building confidence learning a new sport! It's also a great way to stay in shape and travel the region with a few, local tournaments each semester. Club Ultimate is the perfect thing to show off your UMD pride!
